BRAKE First 500

posted on

On the 3rd November 2011 BRAKE announced the first 500 students on the Gold Coast to be awarded the one Queensland Certificate of Education point for completing the initial BRAKE program.

The event was held in Cavill Mall, Surfers Paradise - sponsored by the Surfers Paradise Alliance, which we are extremely grateful for.  We are most appreciative of the time and assistance provide in ensuring the success of such a wonderful event.

BRAKE also announced that 50% of Gold Coast secondary schools provide BRAKE to their students and we would like to continue to increase the number of schools participating.

BRAKE also announced that with community, business and corporate support we wish to implement BRAKE into other local areas of Queensland with an aim to be Queensland wide in three years.

Ultimately BRAKE would like to be able to offer the program to all young people across Australia.

We were fortunate to have Acting Commissioner Ross Barnett APM of the Queensland Police Service, The Honourable John Mickel MP, Member for Logan and Speaker of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and Mr Ron Clarke MBE, Gold Coast Mayor speak at the event.

We also heard from staff and students from The Southport School, Coombabah State High School and St Andrews Lutheran College about their experiences with BRAKE.  Acting Commissioner Barnett presented these schools with BRAKE School of Excellence awards due to their high levels of committment to road safety and their students as well as their committment to the BRAKE Program.  Mr Mickel presented students with BRAKE Certificates of completion and the awrding of the one QCE point.

We also heard from our sponsors in Logan and the Gold Coast - Bendigo Bank.  Without community supportt, and of course sponsorship, BRAKE would not be able to provide the program free of charge to students and schools.  Bendigo Bank has provided this sponsorship, and support, commencing in Logan through Logan Community Bank branches - Bendigo Bank in 2010.

The media event was a great success for BRAKE and we thank our Media and Public Events Coordinator Caroline Russo for all of her work and time.
