The Gold Coast Blaze have teamed up with the BRAKE Driver Awareness Program to be involved in a new video which BRAKE will use throughout schools to help reduce the numbers of deaths and injury of young drivers.

BRAKE founder police Sergeant Rob Duncan thought he could make a difference to the appalling crash statistics for young drivers. 

 Five years later the respected BRAKE Driver Awareness program is in 40 schools around Queensland.

This week BRAKE announced a link with the Gold Coast Blaze that sees several of Blaze’s most talented players become BRAKE ambassadors.

Blaze stars Chris Goulding and Adam Gibson became BRAKE Ambassadors under the watchful eye of Blaze coach Joey Wright.

Their first task was a media call at Southport High School where they were to video tape segments for BRAKE 's innovative eight part training program.

One of the scenes involved a gorilla called Max.  Max is the BRAKE mascot and emblem. 

Steve Allan said that: "You don't often see gorillas even in a jungle - they hide really well.  But gorillas come out of nowhere and cause terrible damage.

We found that student responded to us saying "Don't let the gorilla get you" rather than "Be careful" all the time."  Steve Allan is a Senior Ambulance Officer and BRAKE course developer.

"So Max the Gorilla was created by one of our supporters and is our mascot and logo and he makes live appearances from time to time in the BRAKE program course work," said Steve.

BRAKE has won  numerous prestigious industry and academic awards for its innovative community methodology for its training of young people, just before they start to drive. 

BRAKE recently received the Distance Education Innovation award at the recent Queensland Road Safety Awards.

BRAKE also has the support of Education Queensland.  Students who complete a BRAKE program are given a 1 point credit to the QCE.
